Mmm. Candy corn and cookie dough.
“You get choice not chance when you make it to a Butterball dance.”
Fans of Philadelphia radio are familiar with that tag-line. It belonged to Joseph Tamburro, affectionately known on the air at WDAS-FM as “Butterball” or simply “Butter”.
Butter died this morning and WDAS issued the following statement about an hour ago: “We want to sadly inform you that our on air personality, Butter, has passed away this morning at 10am. We are honoring his memory by playing the music and the artists that he broke. RIP to our good friend, legendary broadcaster, civil rights leader, the soul of the station for 50 years and Philly icon, Butter. We’ll miss you dearly.”
He was 70 years old.
Butter wore many hats throughout his years at the WDAS, everything from advertising sales to program director. But perhaps he will be best remembered for his on air duties hosting the oldies program “Sunday Night Dance Party”.
And oldies on Sundays will never be the same! Butter…RIP.
